Interrupted Development

You didn’t knock

I didn’t expect you

You threw open my doors and made a big entrance

I am usually hesitant at first time meetings

I am usually coy

But I had no time to retreat

No time to force the door closed

You were already here, already in my private space

I bid you welcome

I offered you a seat

You took all of these over tea

You began to feel like an old friend

My tense posture relaxed

I was being the perfect host

Even to an uninvited guest

But I was wary, wanting to know the real purpose of your visit

You said you only wanted to be good friends

That was when I relaxed

Thinking that there could be no harm in that

So I brought out the crackers and the cheese

They go so well with tea

Such laughter we shared

Our conversation traveled far and wide

Extrovert and introvert who willingly converted a little to be attuned to the other

The meeting was interesting, you seemed to belong here

But just as I was going to invite you to dinner

You left through the door that you had flung open

Which neither of us remembered to close.
